Windows 95 Setup Errors

Introduction

During the installation of Windows 95, you may experience errors.  This page will list the possible errors and how can avoid or fix the problems causing these errors.  If you don't see your specific error or need more information refer to the SETUP.TXT that came with the installation disks or CD.

Tip:  MAKE A STARTUP DISK DURING INSTALLATION!  This can help you recover if setup hangs later in the installation.

Windows 95 Setup Error Messages

If you receive one of these messages during Setup, you're trying to install Windows 95 over NT or OS/2.  In both installation cases, make sure you install Windows 95 after booting to DOS.  You will not be able to run Setup from within the operating system.   See SETUP.TXT on the Windows 95 CD-ROM for more information about these scenarios.

This error indicates that you have invoked a power-on password in BIOS.  Go into your BIOS setup program (Usually the PC will display a message when you first turn it on to hit a key combination to enter setup.  This is the BIOS setup utility.) and remove the password.  You can restore it again after Setup is complete.

To setup Windows 95, you must have a MS-DOS partitition on your hard drive.  If you are installing to a HPFS or NTFS file system, you must allocate a DOS partition for setup.   Use Disk Manager for NT or the appropriate OS/2 utility to add a DOS partition.

You cannot have a directory name DESKTOP in your current Windows directory.  If you do, rename it or move DESKTOP to another directory.  You will then be able to run Setup.

Standard Mode: Invalid DPMI return.
Standard Mode: Fault in MS-DOS Extender.
Standard Mode: Bad Fault in MS-DOS Extender.
Standard Mode: Unknown stack in fault dispatcher.
Standard Mode: Stack Overflow.
These errors occur as a result of Setup running into a conflict with your current Memory manager.  Remove all references to a Memory Manager in CONFIG.SYS and run Setup again.  If you are still running into problems with the Setup, refer to SETUP.TXT on the Windows 95 CD-ROM for other tips.

Cannot Read Setup (.cab) Files
This error is fairly rare and refers to PCs that have Multimedia cloaking enabled.   This refers to the ability to load Multimedia extensions and TSRs into upper memory, thereby freeing conventional memory for DOS to use.  If you do have cloaking enabled, remove the reference to CACHECLK in CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT.

Setup Could Not Back Up Your System Files
Setup is trying to make a backup of the system files, but your hard drive does not have enough disk space to complete the task.  Free up disk space and re-run Setup.

Cannot continue on this system configuration
You probably have an older or incompatible disk partition on your hard drive.  This error normally occurs with the older partitions.  To correct this error, boot to DOS and run FDISK to create a clean DOS partition.  BIG NOTE:  Any repartitioning of your hard drive with FDISK will result in data loss.
